REVIEW Leicester Grammar Junior School 2022 - 2023

Sometimes, in primary school, we get to spend the day dressed as a superhero. We get to spend our time imaging that we are fearless and indomitable, flying around the playground with our superhero friends, protecting our precious belongings and defending our loved ones. That enormous feeling of courage seems to come from the tights, the cape, the mask and it is certainly thrilling. At LGJS, even without the costume, I can see the pupils behaving in superhero ways as they move through their learning journey. Courage is one of our school values and the one that, even as adults, is probably the most confronting. In order to show courage, we need to overcome something – a challenge, a test, a problem. Sometimes it might seem easier, quicker, kinder, to remove the obstacle but, in the long run, learning to try and try again, to master the problem and face the fear is one of the most important things we can teach – and learn. Courage is nothing to do with fear disappearing: it is the art, the skill, the superpower of managing and thriving, despite the presence of fear. Courage! Introduction WWW.LGS-JUNIOR.ORG.UK 3 2 LEICESTER GRAMMAR JUNIOR SCHOOL 2022 - 2023 Every single day we see pupils showing their courageous selves and we have recorded some of those amazing moments here in our Review. You will see our children who have found their voices, speaking out for the first time in assembly, groups of pupils working together to solve a complex problem in STEM lessons, individuals preparing for music exams, and lots of us, quite literally, leaping over hurdles. A willingness to show courage to take on and try new things is something very special about the children at Leicester Grammar Junior School. Enjoy looking at the determination and proud smiles through these photographs and reports from this year. I hope you, too, are enormously proud of their accomplishments as you enjoy our LGJS REVIEW 2023.

Head Girl LEICESTER GRAMMAR JUNIOR SCHOOL 2022 - 2023 57 56 Head Boy Aiden Downes Sylvia Vaughan Smith WWW.LGS-JUNIOR.ORG.UK I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at LGJS! I have made so many friends, had so many wonderful experiences and made memories that I will remember forever. I was honoured to be chosen as Head Boy and I have really appreciated every aspect of my role. LGJS gives you so many di erent opportunities; there is something for everyone to enjoy and get involved with. I have especially loved my Science lessons and all the brilliant sporting activities I have been part of over the years. The Year 5 and 6 residential trips were also an amazing highlight as we all had so much fun together! From being in Kinders, all the way up to being in Year 6, I have had a fantastic time at school. I have loved every single minute of being an LGJS pupil and my time here will always be something I cherish and look back on with pride. Being Head Girl has been amazing! I have helped in so many things I cannot choose a favourite. The sta have been amazing, and they have guided us as LGJS pupils through the first steps of our childhood right to being ‘tweens’ in Year 6! I think if I had to pick three memorable moments in year six, they would be: • Narrating the EYFS nativity at Christmastime • Going on our French trip to the north of France • The last week of term when all the year 6 teachers, helpers and parents organised so many things for us to do and most of all enjoy! I’m going to miss every single teacher as we move on and good luck to everyone going on to your next year at school or even a completely new school! Really do enjoy your time being in your new class as the time flies past! Especially good luck to the Year 6 teachers and Year 3 teachers with swapping classrooms! Good luck to new teachers, Prefects and pupils!

58 Leavers Katie Tutt WWW.LGS-JUNIOR.ORG.UK Thirty-one years, that’s how long I’ve been at Leicester Grammar Junior School. I’m pleased to say that’s way over half my life! I started at Evington Hall in 1992, taking over the running of St Paul’s Convent and I knew this was going to be special the first time I heard the singing of the Lord’s Prayer at the end of the first Friday’s assembly. I still get goose-bumps every time I hear it! The building had a unique feeling felt by everyone who entered. The regal staircase, the old chapel, carved marble fireplaces, and the enormous floor-to-ceiling double doors. It certainly was a building ready to entertain all who entered. Rumours of a move began at least ten years before the actual event and at one point we thought we were all moving to Stoughton Farm Park! Would the school ever be the same? I must admit I was sceptical, however, to quote our school song, it’s hearts that make a school, and 15 years in, this unique atmosphere remains. I certainly feel extremely privileged to have had the opportunity to teach at this school, I have made lifelong friends along the way, as well as giving my children such a solid, secure, exceptional education. LGJS continues to evolve and although it is good to take the time to reminisce, it’s important to look to the future too. Goodbye LGJS, and here’s to many more successful years. I have been at LGJS for nearly 9 years and would honestly say that I have enjoyed every one of those years. During my time I have had the privilege of working with some fabulous people who I would now call friends, met some amazing parents who I’ve enjoyed many a chat and a laugh with, but above all absolutely brilliant children. The highlight of my days were always when I would have to go into the classrooms, especially Kinders and Reception where I always got a big hello and in some cases a big hug. I will certainly miss every aspect of life in this lovely school and only wish the very best to the management, sta and students for the future. I will take away some great memories.
