Senior Leadership

Mr Stephen Jeffries
Chief Executive, Leicester Grammar School Trust

Stephen leads the Trust strategically as the principal officer. He chairs the Executive Committee, working with the Heads of the three schools to ensure pupil wellbeing, personal development and educational achievement are at the heart of every decision.

Stephen has lived almost his entire life in the East Midlands and the last 25 years in Leicestershire. Educated at Nottingham High School, he went on to read Law at the University of Leeds.

Stephen trained as a Chartered Accountant with EY, and spent a further decade at KPMG and PwC in their Midlands practices. Following this, he held a senior finance role in a FTSE 100 company before serving as a Finance Director for eight years in the Financial Services sector.

Stephen joined the Trust in 2019 as Director of Finance and Operations. He brought extensive experience in directing the Trust’s financial, operational and compliance functions, including legal, HR, IT, and data protection. He also serves as Director and Chair of LGS Enterprises, the Trust’s trading subsidiary.

Stephen is a keen pianist and is passionate about sport. While he may no longer be the champion sprinter from his school days, he enjoys playing squash regularly and is a season ticket holder at Nottingham Forest. He is immensely proud of his two sons, both of whom were educated within the Trust.

Mrs Sophia Ashworth Jones
Headmistress

Sophia began her career as a teacher aged twenty one, after qualifying from Leeds University with a BSc QTS.  With swift progression into Headship, she has enjoyed an extremely varied and rewarding career in leadership in education across the UK and overseas.  For over twenty years, she has led and worked in nurseries, infant, junior, prep and boarding settings and insists on continuing to teach alongside her headship commitments. Making sure that all children feel valued, with a healthy sense of self-worth and belonging is a priority for Sophia, knowing that the early chapters of schooling play a huge part in shaping lifelong learners and happy adults.

Sophia joined the Leicester Grammar School Trust as Head of the junior school in 2021 where she enjoys the powerful sense of community and support that accompanies the role.

When not at work, Sophia is likely to be found enjoying live music, creating at her sewing machine or out and about in nature.

Outside of school, David enjoys spending time with his family, travelling the world and exploring the outdoors.

Mrs Rachel Strong

Rachel graduated from UCL with a degree in Biological Sciences, however from a young age knew she wanted to pursue a career in teaching. She joined Leicester Grammar Junior School as a Key Stage 1 teacher in 1997 and has served the school community as a classroom teacher in Kinders, Reception, Year 1 and Year 2. In recent years Rachel has focussed on the pastoral development of junior school pupils and is currently the Deputy Head Pastoral and Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL), roles which, in 2023, led her to complete a Masters qualification in inclusive education. Rachel retains her enthusiasm and passion for early childhood development and continues to lead the dedicated team in Kinders.

Rachel is married and has a son and two dogs. When time allows, she enjoys good food, spending time outside in her garden and going for long walks with her dogs.
