Welcome to Year 2! This is very much a transitional year that encourages the children to become independent and responsible. Children follow a subject-based curriculum with Music, Languages and P.E. being taught by specialists.

By the end of Year 2, the aim is that children are able to write independently, with joined and legible handwriting and can read fluently. Mathematics is taught through a combination of fluency, reasoning and problem-solving-based tasks.  Mental arithmetic and practical activities further enhance children's conceptual understanding, preparing them for the Year 3 curriculum.

Science: Life cycles, Animal classification, investigating Materials, Growing Plants and Habitats.

History: An introduction to historical periods (Victorians and Georgians), Florence Nightingale, Grace Darling, Castles and the Battle of Hastings, local figure (David Attenborough).

Geography: Mapwork, United Kingdom and Continents of the World.

Art and D.T: children cover and develop a range of different skills, including sketching, sculpture, collage, sewing and moving mechanisms.

The musical highlight of the year is the preparation and performance of the Infant Nativity, when the Year 2 children have speaking parts. 

Over the course of the year, children have the opportunity to go on school trips. We visit the theatre around Christmas and look forward to visiting a castle to help enhance learning.
